Gut and Immunity

According to research, approximately 80% our immune system cells line the gastrointestinal tract, creating a protective, impermeable barrier. The gut is an ecosystem that relies on trillions of healthy bacteria to aid in immunity. In fact, healthy goodies contain about five pounds of healthy bacteria.

Damage by unhealthy bacteria, viruses, parasites, alcohol, caffeine, excess sugar, anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, and many food substances, will activate the stress and immune response mechanism in the body.

In turn, this immune activation may lead to distant, or systematic (whole body), symptoms and disease which may not seem to be related to the GI tract at all. These conditions may include fertility challenges, arthritis, heart and skin disease, allergies and so on.

Damage increases the permeability of the GI tract, as in leaky gut syndrome. Rather than foods and/or toxins being appropriately broken down for absorption or elimination, undigested food protein/toxins/bacteria/chemicals leak through the damaged barrier directly into the bloodstream. Food intolerances create an inflammation and stress hormones in an alarm response of the body, tax its detoxification abilities, and can lead to autoimmune disorders.
